The Painted World: Popes and Art
Following Michelangelo and the Ceiling, an edition maior of the fourth volume of the series "The Painted Word" was published in collaboration with the Patrons of the Arts.
The volume is devoted to the intense relationship established by Popes Paul VI, John Paul II and Benedict XVI not only with art, but also with artists of their time. The new edition also includes an introduction by Father Mark Haydu, International Director of Patrons of the Arts of the Vatican Museums, and reproduces the full text of Benedict XVI's memorable Address to Artists of 21 November 2009 in the splendid environment of the Sistine Chapel, introduced by Cardinal Ravasi, President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, and is further enhanced by an evocative account of that day by Antonio Paolucci, Director of the Vatican Museums. This is followed by Pope John Paul II's Letter to Artists of 4 April 1999 and Paul VI's Homily for artists pronounced on 7 May 1964, valuable evidence of the pontiffs' love for the art world. The photographic accompaniment has been revised and is included to document the intense activity of patronage by the Vatican association. Among the works illustrated, many are indeed those restored thanks to the fundamental support given by the Patrons of the Arts.
