Before leaving the NHS to open the bookshop Georgia was a Diagnostic Radiographer - working with X-Rays & CT Scanners. So she knows a fair bit about radiation (particularly the ionising kind!) & is fascinated by it! Here she's compiled a list of some fascinating books on the topic.
Radiation is all around us - depending where you live, how you travel, where you work & what you eat we all get varying amounts of it. Ionising radiation - the stuff of x-rays, CT scanners, atomic bombs & nuclear power - has the amazing (& terrifying) ability to make alter atoms by changing the composition of their electrons. It is something with great power - that we only have so much control over. Chernobyl is still radioactive enough to kill you in about 20 minutes, over 30 years on! And it will not be habitable for 20,000 years (& we've no solution to that). For all of our scientific understanding we cannot control radiation - we can merely direct it, contain it, use it for medicine and try not to kill humanity with it. It can both cause and cure cancer. It's one of the most fascinating, but dangerous, things in the universe. I hope these books might inspire you to find out more about a subject I'm so passionate about!!!
